Welcome to SNITCH Stats

This site is dedicated to helping you understand web statistics, how to interpret log file analyser information and decode the usual web stats jargon.

Introduction to web statistics

Forgive me for being blunt, but understanding and interpreting web statistics is...well, really hard work. There are literally hundreds of different stats packages, made up specifically of 2 different types of analyzers: log readers (such as WebTrends, or LiveStats), or integrated javascript code analysers (such as Google Analytics or StatCounter). The difference between the two is explained in the following sections:

If you understand what these two different type of stats analysing packages do, then you begin to understand that there is a world of difference between them. If you have ever attempted to run these different stats packages together on the same website, you'll inevitably see differences, sometimes vast differences, between the results each package tells you. You can spend a good deal of time thinking your website is getting 1,000 visitors a week in one package, then using another package finding that you apparently have only 200 visitors a week. Which one was right? How on earth could there be such a vast difference in what you're seeing?!

Statistics, as you yourself know, are only a way to interpret data into a way which makes sense of a lot of numbers. What we must conclude about internet statistics, and the way that these various packages interpret those statistics, is that the numbers themselves are flawed. BUT, this is not the end of the discussion because even if the numbers themselves are not entirely accurate, then the week-in, week-out difference you are able to see in any one package IS USEFUL! As most webmasters will tell you, it is the trend you see between different sets of dates that is useful in determining how well your website is performing.
